The Green Hornet was one of radio’s best-known and most distinctive adventure shows. Britt Reid, publisher of The Daily Sentinel, was in the position to learn facts about criminals that only the police had access. Armed with this knowledge, a gas gun that rendered foes momentarily unconscious, and a black speedster known as The Black Beauty, he donned the guise of The Green Hornet. Feared by the underworld and sought after by the police, the masked vigilante fought racketeers, gangsters and saboteurs. When the police were faced with red tape, The Green Hornet, with his sidekick Kato, his faithful valet, circumvented protocol and legal procedure in their determined battle to put away crooks.
Since The Green Hornet first appeared on radio in 1936, he has made the transition to motion pictures, comics and television. Very little has been written about the masked marvel and what has been recorded in magazine articles and encyclopedias prior to this publication has never explored the character as deeply… or accurately. For the first time, the complete story of this crime fighter is unmasked, as prolific TV and radio historians Martin Grams and Terry Salomonson usher you into the Black Beauty.
A complete history of the radio series from the creation to conception sketches, reprints from production files to the untold adventures, biographic details of the cast and the characters they played (including Mike Axford, Kato, Gunnigan, Lenore Case, Linda Travis, Ed Lowry, Clicker Binney, Commissioner Higgins, etc.) and background information is all provided under one cover. Also included are details of the two cliffhanger serials produced by Universal in the early forties, the unaired 1952 television pilot, the long-running popularity of the comic books and the William Dozier television series (1966-67) starring Van Williams and Bruce Lee. A complete episode guide documents every adventure including unproduced scripts and plot ideas. Salary costs for actors on the television program, the death of actors Jim Irwin, conception sketches of the Hornet mask… it’s all here. Whether you are a casual fan or a serious enthusiast of the series, here is everything you want to know about The Green Hornet!
“I’ve just finished going through your Green Hornet book and wanted to congratulate you on well-done research. I can imagine some of the many hours it must have taken you to write the book. I wish you best of luck.”
— J. David Goldin, Radio Yesteryear
The Green Hornet A History of Radio Motion Pictures Comics and Television edition by Martin Grams Jr Humor Entertainment eBooks
This book is a must have for any OTR collector/Green Hornet fan.It is chock full of inside information about the charactero in the hornet series in all of its genre from radio, to Comics, to Movie serials, and TV.I certainly enjoyed reading the history of the show as well as that of WXYZ from its early stages of developement. The information help set the tone for the radio series which was a hit during the great depression when people needed a form of entertainment to 'get away from the troubles of their day.'
Being an OTR collector what I especially liked about the book is the plot symnopsis and broadcast dates for the various episodes. I found that becuase of the work of the two authors I was able to correct many erroneous dates and episode titles for shows in my personal collection of the Green Hornet.
I definitely would recommend this 'virtual encyclopedia' of the Green Hornet to any one who has an interest either in Old Time Radio or the Green Hornet proghram itself.

The Green Hornet A History of Radio Motion Pictures Comics and Television edition by Martin Grams Jr Humor Entertainment eBooks Reviews
This is an extensive history and detailed reference guide to all things Green Hornet, but primarily the radio series, which is the source for all the spin-offs. It is very detailed and meticulously researched and documented, including debunking several myths about the character and the radio show. The history begins with the creators of the Lone Ranger looking to create another radio character in the late 1930s and moves forward. There is explanation of how radio series worked at the time included. And episode titles and plotlines for over 1000 radio episodes. There are also sections on the two Universal movie serials, the 60s TV series and some things that did not work so well (a 1952 TV pilot and Green Hornet in comic books). The book led me to go back to listen to several of the radio shows and the background made them more enjoyable. Filled with photos and dialog streams from many of the episodes, this is one of those books to go back to again and again. Highly recommended for fans of the Green Hornet or old-time radio in general.
Ask someone about The Green Hornet and you may get some very different answers.
“That’s the show with Bruce Lee!”
“I saw the movie.”
“I’m a comic collector. I have every issue.”
“I used to listen to the radio show.”
The Green Hornet has a pedigree as distinguished as Batman or Superman but debuted before either of them. He even belongs to a heroic family, as he is a relative of The Lone Ranger.
This book is the definitive history of The Green Hornet and covers every incarnation from his creation through his radio show roots, to his TV show and comics, and everything else, even LP records! Beginning with an introduction by the distinguished Fred Foy, this volume is over 800 pages and not a single line is padded. In fact, for a book this size, it is not a tedious read. It is well-researched, well-organized, and best of all, readable.
No matter what your interest in The Green Hornet, this book has you covered. There’s an episode guide for every radio show, with credits and historical information for each, when known. But this volume presents more than just short synopses, it delves into he production of the series, its creation and its history. The show is put into historical perspective, with deep dives into storylines and arcs.
This is the rare scholarly work that is also entertaining. You’ll find similar depth in the sections about the television show, the movie serials, and the comics books. Everything behind the scenes is covered.
This book is thoroughly illustrated with magazine covers, toys, promotional items, and photographs of the people and personalities involved. If you are interested in the character of The Green Hornet, this book is for you, but if you want to know more, about the people behind the character, the ones who created the character, portrayed the character, and brought The Green Hornet to life in all of his various incarnations, this is an absolute must.
not as up to date as I hoped. Very good otherwise. No mention of the current comics which have been out for over 3 years.
great book, with amazing information
Great book for a friend!
I give the author credit for the extensive research and documentation you will find in this book.
Only a fanatic will probably read this book cover to cover. It's but the sections on the intrigues in the old radio business and the background machinations leading up to the short lived tv show are really interesting and well done.
For many of us who grew up in the sixties, the Green Hornet was our intro to quality radio drama and this books provides an answer to any question you could possibly think of.
A perfect book to peruse through on a hot summer day.
The book arrived today and I wanted to leave a 5 star thumbs up to the sellers/authors! (Thanks for the autographed book, by the way.) There was no feedback button on my order page, so the next best thing was to write a review on how I am liking the book so far. (Come on, , not all re-designs/revamps on your web pages are good...) What everyone else has said rings true. How detailed and thorough this book is. (Makes me want to get other books written by the authors.) This is a great read. What little information that was out there before on The Green Hornet has been greatly enhanced. Thanks for this book!
